Pet Travel Guide

Traveling with pets can sometimes be difficult. But preparing your pet for travel can make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Here are a few things to keep in mind while traveling with your pet.

Good Carrier

Buy a secure carrier for your pet. Your pet carrier should be a crate of adequate space and properly ventilated for your pet. There should also be a means to tie the carrier down in your method of transporation.

Sturdy Lease

A sturdy lease will ensure that your dog, cat, or whatever stays close to you at all times. And be sure to tie some extra plastic bags on your lease in case your pet decides to relieve itself. We've found that tying a bag to the lease everytime we pass a bag dispencer ensures we will always have the right cleanup equipment.

Additionally, we recommend bringing an extra collar - just in case the original is damaged during travel and becomes inoperative during some exciting travel activities such as rafting, swimming, or even sledding in the snow!

Current Pet Tags

Verify that your pet's tags are current. The tags should include all appropriate local and state required tags.

Blanket & Pillows

Just because you might not bring blankets and pillows for yourself during that long trip up to the mountains, doesn't mean your pet should go without them. An old blanket or sheet for the back seat of your car or wherever the pet's carrier will be secured to make cleanup easier. Pillows are also great to put in the back of your car for your pets. Not only are they comfortable, but they also will keep your dog from sliding back and forth along the back seat.

Food & Water

Be sure to bring enough water for all of your pets and more. There's nothing worse than watching your cat fry in the backseat as you drive through 100 plug degree weather only to discover you forgot to bring extra water. So load up!

In terms of food, you have two choices: bring enough pet food to provide at least one meal to your pets, or if they enjoy human food (and are allowed...) just pull up to the local Sonic drive-in and order extra!
